LADY BOBCATS WIN REGIONALS!!!
3/9/2013 By: Melanie B. Mazur

Gabriella Garcia, left, and Pamela Cotton lift the Region 3 championship plaque Saturday inside the Durango Demon gym.

Monday update: Bracket released for state 2A tourney. Ignacio, 16-7, plays #1 ranked Akron, 24-0, at 10:15 a.m. Thursday. The winner moves to a Final Four game at 8:30 p.m. Friday, losing team goes to the consolation bracket.
Also playing at the Great 8 are Sangre de Christo, Peyton, Vanguard, Yuma, Lutheran and Simla. Go, Bobcats!

The Lady Bobcats clawed their way back in a scrappy game over Paonia to win the regional title 53-49 on Saturday. They will be off to state next weekend at CSU Pueblo to play in the Great Eight.
The girls jumped and screamed at the end of the game, hoisting the regional plaque over their heads for the first time in..heck, I can't remember, but it's been awhile.

Things didn't go so well for the Bobcat boys, who lost a heartbreaker to Lutheran High School, 52 to 46. The first half of the game was even, with the score 9-4 for the Bobcats at the end of the first, then the Cats fell behind to 16-21 at the half.
The Bobcats roared back to life in the third quarter, pulling to a 36-23 lead and seemingly ready to take Ignacio's second regional title of the evening.
The boys stalled in the fourth quarter, however, as the Lutheran Lions scored 12 points, and the Cats lots the game.

Read more of Joel Priest's coverage of the games, as well as the first round of the state tournament, in Friday's Pine River Times. Good luck Ladycats! We are proud of you! And thank you boys, for a great season. With this year's team made up overwhelmingly of sophomores and juniors, we are looking forward to another great year in 2014!
