Bayfield’s Fourth of July fireworks might need a new place to happen this summer, Town Manager Chris La May told the town board Tuesday.
“The school is likely to be breaking ground on the baseball field” which has been the fireworks launch area, he said and suggested the grounds around the town water treatment plant as an alternate site. School land just west of the water plant (east of the usual launch area) might be another option, he said.
Public Works Director Ron Saba doesn’t like the idea of launching from the water plant because of the possibility of debris landing in the water reservoir, La May said.
Trustee Michelle Nelson commented, “Safety of the spectators should count more than debris in the reservoir.”
School Superintendent Troy Zabel told the Times, “We’ve asked (the town) to have a back-up plan. By then we may have the permit to break ground on the ball field. It’s out of our control with the state. … We just want to give (the town) a heads-up.”
He said he hasn’t been approached about using school land east of the usual launch area.
“We would still have the stadium area open” for spectators, Zabel said.
Last year, July 4 fireworks were cancelled in Bayfield and around the area because of high fire danger.
