La Plata County Fair gearing up this week

The La Plata County Fair kicks off Wednesday, with several events starting to set up this week.
Tuesday is the due day for assorted 4-H projects. The 4-H fashion review is that evening.
Most exhibitor entries are due on Wednesday in 4-H and open class categories. The 4-H sheep show and open class sheep judging are that afternoon. Swine showmanship will follow.
Exhibits will open to the public Thursday morning. They will continue to Sunday afternoon. Those include everything from small and large livestock to quilts, canned and baked goods, home-brewed wine, arts and crafts, photography, displays of fresh flowers and vegetables, and a big assortment of 4-H project displays.
Livestock and project judging starts in the morning Thursday. The 4-H goat show is that afternoon, followed by open class goats. Fair royalty speeches and the corn shucking contest are that evening.
The fair gets into high gear next Friday and Saturday, including the most popular spectator events:
• Friday – 4-H/ FFA breeding and market beef judging, livestock round-robin showmanship, the Silver Steaks Award presentation at 5 p.m., and at 7 p.m. the talent contest and tractor pull.
• Saturday – the 4-H barbecue cook-off all afternoon, the demolition derby, and the 4-H junior livestock auction. Also open class beef and dairy judging, 4-H dog show, rooster crowing contest, FFA showmanship, 4-H marketplace for young entrepreneurs, the poultry and rabbit costume contests, fair royalty crowning, and family dance.
• Sunday – cowboy church, exhibits open until 2 p.m., and the 4-H/ FFA catch-it contests at 1:30.
The fair carnival will be open Wednesday through Sunday.
