Ballantine Communications purchases Pine River Times
1/6/2014 By: Times staff report
Hi all, this is Melanie. We are having some hiccups this morning getting the newspaper out as we switch distribution systems. So the link for today's paper is below if you'd like to see it! Bayfield and Ignacio subscribers should be getting their papers today, I hope, and Durango should be there on Saturday. I'm trying to get our out-of-area papers out ASAP. So please bear with us for a week or two! Soon things should be running smoothly again.
Sorry for any inconvenience,
This week's edition:
Ballantine Communications Inc. is pleased to announce it purchased Pine River Publishing on Monday. Pine River Publishing produces the weekly Pine River Times newspaper, Bayfield and Ignacio high schools' sports posters, and Seasons magazine.
"We looked at the Times' circulation and demographics and decided it was a good fit with Ballantine Communications," said Ballantine CEO Doug Bennett. "We are pleased to be a member of the growing community in the Pine River Valley."
Bennett said Times readers shouldn't expect to see big changes in the weekly newspaper's strong local coverage of the people and events in Bayfield, Ignacio and Vallecito. But to ensure that the Times will grow and thrive in a time of rapid technological change and shifting consumer preferences, he said Ballantine will leverage its expertise in digital media and online publishing to expand coverage and content through the paper's website (www.pinerivertimes.com) , social media and mobile delivery platforms. Ballantine publishes The Durango Herald, Directory Plus and three newspapers in Montezuma County, the twice weekly Cortez Journal and two weeklies, the Mancos Times and the Dolores Star. All publications have related websites.
"This transaction is beneficial to all parties concerned," Bennett said.
Melanie Mazur, publisher, editor and co-owner of the Times, agreed.
"We are glad that the transaction has closed and we look forward to continuing to serve our local communities with the financial and operational support of Ballantine Communications," she said.
Terms of the purchase were not disclosed
Mazur will stay on as managing editor of the Times. Carole McWilliams, the paper's longtime reporter, also remains on staff. While Ballantine plans to maintain the Times' office at 110 E. Mill Street in downtown Bayfield, it will use its circulation resources to offer Times subscribers home delivery.
"We're delighted that Melanie will continue to lead the Pine River Times," Bennett said. "She has been a great advocate for the Valley's communities. Readers will continue to be able to see her at her office on Mill Street and she'll continue to be very visible in the community. The Times will continue to be an all-local paper."
Melanie and Robert Mazur purchased the Pine River Times in 2002.
"We are so proud to have been the caretakers of our community newspaper for almost 12 years," said Melanie Mazur. "This purchase allows me to focus more on reporting and editing, which is the part of the news industry that I love. I'm pleased the Times is becoming part of a company that has the resources to keep it growing and thriving."
Since the Mazurs acquired the Times, the newspaper has won many awards in the Colorado Press Association's annual competition, including the General Excellence and Advertising Sweepstakes awards in 2009. Those honors placed it in the top echelon of Colorado newspapers with 1,700 or less weekly circulation.
Mazur is president of the Bayfield Area Chamber of Commerce and was member of the year for the Ignacio Chamber of Commerce in 2008. The Mazurs are members of Calvary Presbyterian Church in Bayfield.
