Bookkeeper allegedly stole more than $76,000 from Bayfield Chiropractic 6/29/2007 By: Melanie Mazur
A Pagosa Springs bookkeeper embezzled more than $76,000 from 2004 to 2007 from Bayfield chiropractor Dan McClure, Bayfield Marshal Jim Harrington said yesterday.
Harrington issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for Juan Quintana, 38. Harrington said Quintana had total access to the books and paperwork at Bayfield Chiropractic, the practice owned by McClure.
Quintana allegedly wrote checks to himself, and entered them into the business checkbook as a legitimate expense check, such as a utility bill payment.
Quintana embezzled at least $12,000 in this manner, and charged more than $17,000 to company credit cards for personal expenses, including trips to Alaska and Pennsylvania, Harrington said. Quintana was fired on April 27, the police report stated. Marshal’s office personnel searched Quintana’s home in Pagosa Springs on June 1, taking a computer as evidence, which has been sent to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Clark White and Associates, a Durango accounting firm, is examining the company’s financial records to audit them and try to figure out how much was stolen, Harrington said. Records from 2004 also need to be examined, he added.
The $76,443 that Quintana allegedly embezzled “is the tip of the iceberg,” Harrington said. Quintana’s bond has been set at $25,000.
McClure, known as “Dr. Dan” to many locals, said he could not comment on the case until Quintana was arrested.
