Sanitation district to dissolve
Scott Kujath and Bill Faust have been re-elected to the Bayfield School Board, with Don Mooney joining as a new member.
Faust had 985 votes, while Kujath received 974. Mooney received 844 votes.
Jeff Eckstein garnered 455 votes, while Susan Folk had 457. For the school board race, 1,484 ballots were cast, the La Plata County clerk’s office reported.
Votes from the mail-in election were counted Tuesday night by the County Clerk’s office in Durango.
Ignacio’s school board race was cancelled after three people ran for three open seats.
In the Bayfield Sanitation District question, 458 votes were cast in favor of dissolving the district, while 55 voters said no.
Faust said he appreciates the support from the voters.
“Maybe they liked the way the district was going and wanted to keep it going,” Faust said. “It’s a little daunting to think people have that much faith and trust in what we’re doing.”
Faust said he appreciated Eckstein and Folk running for the board.
“It’s nice to have some people interested and willing to give up their time.”
Faust was named as a winner of the McGuffey Award, awarded to outstanding school board members by the Colorado Association of School Boards. The board also was named this fall as an All-State Board by CASB, the first time a Western Slope board was so honored.
Dissolving the Bayfield Sanitation District will not be a big change as far as the district’s customers are concerned, said Justin Clifton, Bayfield’s town manager.
The town has been operating the sanitation district since April of 2006.
Dissolving the district as a separate entity and bringing it under town management will be more efficient for budgeting and management, Clifton explained. Management and accounting services, for example, will be handled by town staff, instead of being contracted out.
