Longtime Ignacio Coach Butch Melton dies

Schools will be closed in Ignacio Wednesday for memorial services for Butch Melton.
The longtime coach and athletic director at Ignacio High School died Saturday at Mercy Regional Medical Center. He was 57.
Remembrances of Mr. Melton will be in Friday's Pine River Times.
The following is his obituary notice from Hood Mortuary:
Clyde William “Butch” Melton, 57, died Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango, Colorado. A Memorial Service will be Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. at Ignacio High School Gymnasium.. Father Doug Hunt of St. Ignatius Catholic Church will be officiating. Cremation will occur at Hood Mortuary Crematory in Durango. .
Mr. Melton was born January 29, 1951 in Columbus, Nebraska the son of Ross and Dolores Melton. Mr. Melton grew up and attended schools in Idaho Springs, CO after his family moved from Denver. He attended college at Metro State in Denver and earned his degree in teaching. In 1973, he moved to the Ignacio area and began teaching and coaching wrestling in the Ignacio School District. His coaching tenure was from 1973 to 1991. In 1991, he became the Athletic Director and remained in that position until his health prevented him from working in 2005. He enjoyed watching sports to include the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Rockies and the Nebraska Corn Huskers. He loved family time and being present and helping out with younger kids in his community. "The kids always brought him a smile."
He is survived by, Dixie Melton (spouse) of Ignacio, Ross Melton (son) of Golden, CO, Rachel Melton (daughter) of San Diego, CA, Bob Melton (brother) of Morrison, CO, Pam Carvey (sister) of Littleton, CO, and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ignacio High School Booster Club, ATTN: Janet Reinhardt or Ignacio Wrestling Club, ATTN Janet Reinhardt.
