Times to continue for short term 11/6/2009 By: Times staff report
We’re back
The Pine River Times has received a short-term reprieve from having to close its doors. An anonymous donor has paid for the next two weeks’ of the paper’s printing, as well as last week’s, at a cost of more than $1,900. That, combined with a drastic reduction in the company’s payroll, is keeping the newspaper alive at least through the Nov. 13 issue. Times’ employees are currently being paid for one day of work per week. After announcing last week that the business was closing its doors, publisher Melanie Mazur said two parties have come forward who are interested in either purchasing or investing in the company. She declined to name the two entities. “In order for someone to buy or purchase the paper, there needs to be something to buy, so we’re trying to keep publishing,” she said. The newspaper also has been buoyed by an outpouring of community support. Several letters supporting the paper are on Page 3. “We just had too many people say we couldn’t close,” Mazur said. “So I’m asking for those readers and companies who want to keep a local paper to consider helping us pay for it.” The newspaper is selling $15 in-county subscriptions until Nov. 20, which is half off of the usual price of $30. In addition to printing its next two editions, the Times is planning to print the winter sports posters for Bayfield and Ignacio high schools. For now, the company is not planning to print its annual winter and Christmas guide, in part because of the high cost of printing a special section.
