SUCAP honored as non-profit of the year
1/22/2010 By: Times staff report

The Southern Ute Community Action Program has been honored as the Non-Profit of the Year by the Durango Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Ignacio-based organization received the award on Jan. 14 during the chamber’s annual award ceremony. Board member Gina Schulz and employees Peter Tregillus and Char Schank accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
SUCAP board members and staff said it was gratifying for a non-profit that works mostly behind the scenes and is based in Ignacio was honored as one of the area’s best.
“We have a wide scope of programs and diversity,” said Eileen Wasserbach, SUCAP’s director. “It’s nice to know that you’re doing a good job.”
SUCAP operates the following programs:
Southern Ute Montessori Head Start and Early Head Start
Peaceful Spirit adult recovery and youth services
Road Runner Transit
Ignacio Senior Center
Youth Services Center
Training Advantage
SUCAP is 44 years old and one of the older non-profits in the area.
Wasserbach acknowledged the role the Southern Ute Indian Tribe had in founding SUCAP and supporting it for the past four decades.
“They had the vision of establishing and organization to serve everybody and leveraging Indian and non-Indian fund for a bigger impact,” she said.
Wasserbach also credited Donna Young, who served as SUCAP’s director for 30 years, for the program’s success.
“She really set the tone for accountability and the quality of programs,” Wasserbach said.
She and board member George Knoll also credited SUCAP’s staff for its success.
“They jobs are not easy and they don’t make a lot of money, and they do a really good job,” she said.
SUCAP is operated by a 19-member board and employs about 160 full-time and part-time employees.
