Owen “Papa Jim”J. Richmond Owen “Papa Jim” J. Richmond, 71, died Monday, March 10, 2008, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at Pine River Valley Baptist Church. Chaplain Earl Caudill will officiate. Burial will occur at Ignacio East Cemetery in Ignacio. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m.Sunday, March 16, at Hood Mortuary in Durango. Mr. Richmond was born Sept. 7, 1936, in Dexter, N.M., the son of Rex R. and Vivian L. Richmond.
His family moved to Ignacio when he was eight, where they bought a homestead called Fair Field Farms from the Ritters. His family had a dairy and he and his brothers would milk 50 head of dairy cattle before going to school. He graduated from Ignacio High School in 1956.
After graduation, he attended Pipeline Welding School in Tulsa, Okla. On February 13, 1965, he married Virginia L. Clark in Roswell, N.M. They were married for 43 years. He was a rancher for his entire life. In the late 1960s and 1970s, he owned and operated a feedlot. He owned the Ignacio Sale Barn from 1980 to1995.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Richmond of Ignacio; son Jeff Richmond of Ignacio; daughter Michelle (Susie) Richmond of Ignacio; four grandchildren; a brother, Jerry Richmond of Chino Valley, Ariz.; and a sister, June Ingle of San Antonio; and numerous nieces and nephews.
