31 Wolverines heading to state
Written by: Joel Priest

In the most Pueblo-like weather conditions to date [meaning sunny—no snow!], the Bayfield track-and-field teams made final preparations on Saturday for this weekend’s 3A State Championships by dominating regionals held at Wolverine Country Stadium.

Pulling away from Pagosa Springs, 164.5 to 126, the Wolverine boys secured the team title, while the Lady Wolverines (144 points) took runner-up behind the Lady Pirates (170). Salida (96) finished third on the girls’ side, while Monte Vista (86) took third on the boys’ table.

Sophomore sprinter Dakota Decker was named the Intermountain League’s Athlete-of-the-Year after copping the regional win in the 200-meter dash, clocking a state-worthy 22.96 seconds and beating Florence senior Adam Mokhriby by .07 at the line. Only a wayward falling pole spoiled a new stadium record of 15’1½” for senior pole vault king Ryan Wirth, who still won with a successful 14’6” effort.

Junior Adam LeFevre continued a strong season in the 300-meter hurdles, winning the event in 43.46 seconds, and also placed second in the 110 hurdles (17.03).

Senior Jake Krueger and sophomore Jesse Krueger were again joined at the hip in the 800 meters, finishing first
(2:03.37) and second (2:03.69).
Bayfield also scored relay titles in all but the 4x400 (finishing third), taking the 4x1 in 45.45 seconds, the 4x2 in 1:34.14, and the 4x8 in 8:32.52—over six seconds ahead of Pagosa.

Freshman Myra Dean showed she’ll already be a force in the girls’ high jump for years to come, snapping the old school record with a 5’5” bound and earning herself the regional crown by four inches over Florence senior Krista Pryor. Junior Jenny Young placed fourth in the event, but captured the 100-meter hurdles in 17.61 seconds. Junior Alexis Pommier scored a title in the 300 hurdles in 49.21—the lone runner to break fifty seconds—and senior Janice McClain captured the pole vault with a state-worthy 8’6” (the starting height) clearance.

BHS swept the podium positions in the discipline with sophomore Marleigh Coffelt topping out at seven feet and freshman Shelby Williamson finishing at six feet. Senior Blake Johnson took second among the boys with a successful 11’6” vault, and freshman Jacob Hetrick was third at 8’6”.

Bayfield’s girls were also strong in the relay races, taking the 4x100-meters in 52.92, finishing second in the 800 medley (1:57.63), and third in the 4x2 (1:52.93), 4x4 (4:24.86), and 4x8 (10:43.3).
