Three Wolverines are All-League
Written by: Joel Priest
6/8/2007

When the All-Intermountain League baseball team was announced recently, the representatives from Bayfield—juniors Marshall Beebe, Michael McGraw, and sophomore Jeff Huffmyer—surprised few. Especially head coach Ken Hibbard.

As Bayfield invaded the state tournament and claimed the District 8 title, Beebe was a prime piston in the team’s engine both with the bat and a glove in centerfield. McGraw spent nearly twice as long on the mound as the next pitcher, and Huffmyer—voted ‘Best Defender’ in the Wolverines’ team awards—was solid guarding the hot corner at third.

“It would have been nice to finish a little better as a team,” said Hibbard, “but when you make it to the state tournament, you’ve still done something big and anything can happen. And since the league’s coaches pick the all-league team, our three guys made a good impression.”

‘Beebs’ was the lone BHS blip on the Denver-area media radar (“…always seems to smack the ball to the gaps…,” according to the Rocky Mountain News), and paced the team in most offensive categories, including hits (29) and RBI (25). His .387 average ranked behind only senior Jeramie Price’s .413 among the regulars, while his two homers trailed only sophomore Logan Funkhouser’s three.
Amassing six doubles and four triples along the way, Beebe compiled an impressive .653 slugging average that also led the squad.

Huffmyer wasn’t far behind in that department with his .567 mark, and also with his .365 batting average. ‘Huff’ tied Beebe with 12 extra-base hits (no other Wolverine had more than six) including a team-best nine doubles, was just behind in RBI with 23 and hits with 27, and was just ahead in runs scored (27-26) as he often hit leadoff.

‘Tug’ McGraw was a deserving winner of the team’s MVP award, and made his biggest mark on the hill. Throwing 52 innings (runner-up Garrett Laner pitched 28) and finishing with a 5-5 record and 5.38 ERA, McGraw was the staff ace and often neared the now-dreaded hundred-pitch count in his starts.
Mirroring Bayfield’s up-and-down season, sometimes the work was rewarded (31 strikeouts), while other times it wasn’t (27 walks).

McGraw also batted .367 (18-49), scored 18 runs (fifth-best), and drove in a dozen more. His 10-10 walk-to-strikeout ratio was second-highest among the team regulars, as only junior Trevor Most (17-12) recorded more free passes than he fanned.

“That was how our season went, and if you look at our stats we really didn’t do as well as we’d hoped,” said Hibbard. Bayfield finished 11-11 in 2007, and advanced to the Elite Eight of the 3A tournament.
