Wolverines football upsets Pagosa, makes playoffs Written by: Dan Ford 11/9/2009
Bayfield’s football Wolverines earned their way into the state playoffs last Friday with a strong win over rival Pagosa Springs, 21-20. Stands on both sides of the field were filled on a chilly night for the final home game of the regular season at Wolverine Country. Brenden Harrison and an efficient offensive of brothers Austin and Zack Riley, Cody Butero, Alex Araujo and Derek Hillyer led the Wolverines as they pushed the Pirates out of the way for most of the game. Harrison rushed for over 170 yards on 30 carries and scored two of the Wolverine touchdowns. A blitzing defense led by Tanner McGhehey, Robert Westbrook and Jordan Fields kept Taylor Shaffer, one of the leading passers in Colorado, off balance and on his back throughout the game. QB Ryan Terry also had a strong game in managing the offense, breaking tackles and muscling his way up field. “He really wanted to win this game,” commented Head Coach Marshall Hahn. Bayfield scored on its opening drive with Harrison running in from the seven. With 8:21 left in the first quarter, Bayfield lead 8-0 after Terry nosed across the line on a two-point conversion. Bayfield never trailed after that. Shaffer scored from one yard out in the last minute of the first half but the two-point conversion pass was tipped away and Bayfield led at the half, 8-6. The Wolverines pulled away with a 5-yard pass from Terry to Aaron Velasquez with 3.58 left in the third. The spectacular catch over the middle by Velasquez was his 13th touchdown of the season. The two-point conversion failed and Bayfield led, 14-6. Harrison scored his last touchdown from 18 yards out on the opening play of the fourth quarter and, after a Derek MacGuffie extra point kick, Bayfield was up, 21-6. Although Bayfield was dominating at that point, Pagosa did not call it quits. Andrew Rice had an errant fumble bounce into his lap and he raced 35 yards to change the momentum and put the Pirates on the board at 14-21 after the Tyson Ross two-point conversion run with 8:41 left in the game. They then marched down the field on passes from Shaffer to Ross until the final one of 13 yards put the Pirates into the end zone with 3:25 left in the game. Ross, a valuable weapon for the Pirates, was injured on the play and forced to watch the deciding extra point from the sidelines. Shaffer’s pass on a slant pattern was batted away by Terry to preserve the 21-20 lead. Bayfield, on the legs of Harrison, kept the ball for the rest of the game including a fourth and one sneak by Terry at mid-field. The entire purple line (Bayfield was dressed in the solid color for the first time this season) moved the Pirates off of the ball and Terry was able to easily seal the victory for the Wolverines with a short gain. Bayfield (7-3) was 4-0 in home games this season and have now beaten Pagosa three of the last four times. Coach Hahn said, “We did what we had to do tonight. We always play well at home and the good crowd helped.” Bayfield qualified for State this Saturday in Denver against #1 seed Faith Christian. BHS qualified as the #16 and last team in the 2A bracket. The game will be broadcast on KPCL 107.1 Saturday afternoon and can also be heard on the internet at www.wallydsports.com . Pagosa (7-3) will host Aspen in the first round. Mountain League runner-up Salida (5-5) travels to Olathe.
