Bayfield gets too much Faith
Written by: Dan Ford
11/16/2009

The Bayfield football season came to a wet and cold end last Saturday in Arvada at the hands of the #1 seeded Faith Christian Eagles, 34-7. The home team showed why they are always at the top of the rankings and have two state championships to their credit in this decade. The machine of disciplined, talented and athletic players used their superior size and depth to score on four of their first five possessions to build a 27-0 lead by halftime. Bayfield played as well as it could and did not give up any big plays during the game, although three interceptions of quarterback Ryan Terry didn’t help the underdogs. Faith on the other hand was flawless and relentless in moving the ball down the field. It wasn’t until the second half that the Eagles lost their concentration and made some mistakes.

Five different players scored touchdowns for Faith during the game.

It was an odd venue to witness with the private school and its artificial turf field resting in a residential neighborhood bordered by a mini-storage unit and the sites and sounds of nearby I-70. As a private school it does not represent a particular population from the Arvada area. Instead, the decent but not overwhelming home crowd was made up of parents and students who must have come from all over the metropolitan area. In contract, Bayfield had good representation of fans who bounced between Denver Coliseum and the Faith Christian Academy to witness football and volleyball. There wasn’t much for the visitors to celebrate until Brenden Harrison raced 44 yards with 1:05 left in the contest to cap the scoring. It spoiled what would have been the seventh shutout of the season for Faith. Early in the second half the muffled sound of one glove hitting another could be heard as Bayfield applauded the diving interception by Sonny Salazar that represented one of the few other times Wolverine fans could cheer.

The careers of 11 seniors came to a close as the Wolverines finished 7-4 on the year. The senior class won 22 games in their last three years which ranks up there with for careers, falling short of the mid-90s and the good teams in the mid-60s but besting any other classes since Bayfield started football in 1924.

Coach Marshall Hahn’s team traveled through the snow on Hwy 285, stopping in Alamosa on Friday to practice before arriving at their motel in Golden at 5:30pm Friday night. After the game they prepared to reverse the trip but not before Coach Hahn talked to the team and thanked them for the effort this season. “I hope this will help you in understanding what it takes to be successful for next season or for the rest of your life” he consoled. Tearful seniors then met separately with Coach Herb Stinson to hear his words of encouragement and appreciation.

Pagosa Springs lost their opening game to Aspen, 46-41 while Salida was overcome by Olathe 52-7 ending the seasons for the Mountain League qualifiers.
