Velasquez wins at ‘The Velasquez’
If it seemed as though the upcoming State Track-and-Field Championships may be small potatoes compared to last Saturday’s meet named for his well-known ancestor, well…maybe.
For there was no way, no how, that Bayfield senior Aaron Velasquez was going to lose the discus throw at the 2012 Abel Velasquez Invitational inside Wolverine Country Stadium. Letting loose a 141-foot, seven-inch effort, Velasquez prevailed by a solid 17 feet over senior Shane Richmond of Ignacio.
Abel Velasquez, a longtime throws coach known for working with both schools, would have appreciated that—and the fact that BHS’ Aubry Brown and IHS’ Colton Wyatt followed in third and fourth at what has become the Ignacio-hosted, Bayfield-staged spectacle’s signature event.
Bayfield’s Candace Shaw (119’5”) and Haley Goddard (112’2”) went 1-2 in the girls’ discus.
The Wolverine boys and girls racked up winning point totals of 172 and 166, respectively, to defeat runners-up Pagosa Springs by 38 and 47, respectively. The Bobcat gents were fifth (56 points), while the ladies were fourth (53).
BHS junior T.J. Pazell had the top medal haul of any Pine River Valley athlete, winning the long (19’11.5”) and triple (39’9.5”) jumps, as well as the shot put (46’4”).
