Hitting dead Center: BHS 9-nil Written by: Joel Priest 9/20/2012
Recovering from a 5-0 loss to Crested Butte three days before, the Bayfield boys’ soccer team wasted no time in routing a Center Vikings team trying to stop a five-match shutout slide. The Wolverines made it six; senior Kenai Duran converted a rebound let loose by CHS goalie Alberto Rodriguez in the fourth minute, and the goal held up as the winner in a 9-nil win at Wolverine Country Stadium Tuesday afternoon. Freshman Samuel Kundrik cashed another straying carom in the 12th, and off pressure created by senior Devin Wilson, sophomore Austin Isidoria struck in the 14th. Wilson then carried in from the left wing to score in the 15th before Center finally came together and held until Isidoria scored in the 32nd. Senior Myles Popke netted three minutes later for the Wolverines (1-3-1, 1-2-0 3A Southwestern), and the visitors’ fate was virtually sealed when Rodriguez was injured on a point-blank range save in the 38th. 3:55 of stoppage time was added before the half was declared concluded, in which the Vikes (0-7, 0-4 SWL) managed to earn their lone offensive highlight—an unsuccessful corner kick—before intermission. Senior keeper James Young snared Center’s lone intrusion—a free kick—into the penalty area, as the guests did well just to approach as close as sweeper Keith Wickman, let alone Young. SWL play continues next for freshly-dressed BHS, tomorrow at 11 a.m. in Pagosa Springs, with 4A Aztec, N.M., visiting WCS next Tuesday at 4 p.m.
