IHS girls stave off Sargent’s surge Written by: Joel Priest 1/31/2013
Looking back, the Sargent Lady Farmers didn’t stand a chance on Saturday in Ignacio. Behind hot shooting early from Lady Bobcat guards Michelle Simmons (seven first-quarter points) and Cloe Seibel (six), Ignacio raced out to a 15-9 lead which grew slightly to 25-17 at halftime, though the duo was held to one free throw in the second. “We got a little worried there for a second, but we pulled back our defense and switched it up a little bit—put the ‘12 Half’ on, and it worked good…gave them a new look they weren’t expecting,” said IHS head coach Justa Whitt. “So I think that helped…really got us that extra ‘oomph’ we needed.” And if it didn’t completely do the trick—Sargent went on a 9-2 burst ending the third, after Skylar Eagles departed, cutting the Lady Bobcats’ lead to just 32-28—a more simple option did: “Fast breaks…that’s what we do best!” said sophomore IHS guard Sky Cotton, who blew up for 10 fourth-quarter points (giving her a game-high 15) after often sneaking undetected out of possession scrums on the defensive end to give the strong-armed Simmons a wide-open target downcourt. “Our defensive pressure really boosted up,” she added, her hoops helping IHS rebuild a lead as great as 16 points late down the stretch. “Once we got into it, we started rolling and keeping it going.” “Sargent just went out there and played their game and we played ours,” she continued, addressing IHS’ full-court pressure (she and Simmons totaled 12 steals). “And in the end we came out on top.” But it didn’t come without one last scare. Forward Pam Cotton—in her second game back from injury—hit the deck with 90 seconds left in the 46-32 victory, with a ‘crack’ heard throughout the venue. Fortunately for the Lady ’Cats (6-7, 2-1 2A/1A San Juan Basin) the sound was that of her knee brace meeting the floor and not a bone break, though the pain produced pressed Whitt into preemptively pulling the senior. And like Eagles, she also did not return as a precaution. “The last couple games we’ve played, we haven’t finished well,” said Whitt. “So I told the girls at halftime we have to finish this game—in fact, I told them they’re going to run if they didn’t finish it!” “Our guards, especially, were on it from the get-go. They did exactly what I asked them to do.” Simmons finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Seibel totaled eight points. Seniors Valerie Armstrong (five points) and Mariah Vigil (four), and junior Gabriela Garcia (two) also scored. Up next for the Lady ’Cats will be this evening’s home game against Nucla (5-6, 4-3 SJBL), before a road trip—weather permitting, of course—tomorrow to Ouray. They go on the road Tuesday to Bayfield to face the rival Wolverines. Game time is scheduled for 5:30.
