Wolverine football trounces Dolores

How good is the Bayfield football team, you ask? Judging from the opening game in Dolores last Friday, it’s a pretty darn good one.
The Wolverines opened the 2010 campaign against the smaller school and clawed their way to a 40-6 mauling of the Dolores Bears. Bayfield scored on its opening drive without much resistance as Seth Posey rumbled the last 15 yards, putting BHS on the board with just over two minutes gone in the game. T.J. Pazell took a long punt over the shoulder and ran untouched through the Dolores coverage for 70 yards just a few minutes later and the romp was on 14-0 with 7:44 to go in the first stanza.
The Wolverines made mistakes and had a turnover in the second quarter that kept the game within reach although their impressive dominance was obvious even with only a 14-0 lead. With only three minutes left in the half Bayfield started a drive from its own two yard line. Junior QB Colt Walker led his team down the field without benefit of a pass play. Walker took it the last 21 yards with just that many seconds left in the half. A Pazell kick made it 21-0 at intermission.
Dolores started the second half with an impressive drive themselves that took some time off of the clock but when Bayfield got the ball back they quickly went down the field, eventually scoring three times in the third quarter. Walker ran up the middle behind outstanding offensive line play that often saw the big linemen blocking well downfield. He had another 21-yard TD run coupled with a 41-yard rumble to the end zone by Posey. The last touchdown was a Cameron Shablo 30-yard interception return. With 1:48 left in the third quarter the running clock was turned on as Bayfield held a 40-0 lead. Dolores marched down the field to score with 3:45 in the game on an Austin McCracken 2-yd run, ending the scoring.
Bayfield had numerous penalties and had two touchdowns called back due to those violations. Dolores, a 1A school, will have a successful team and likely a winning record but were outmatched in this opening game for both schools.
The Junior Class for Bayfield including Posey, Walker, Shablo, Aaron Velasquez, Robert Westbrook and Austin Riley were said to be the first YAFL team started in Bayfield when they were BES students. Their poise, confidence and overall skill honed over many years of games and practices showed in this first game. Is Bayfield good? Well, I guess but, despite the evening chill in Dolores, it’s still a long way to November.
Bayfield will host rival Ignacio in the Pine River Classic this Friday. The rivalry began in 1931 and BHS leads the series, 31-18. Bayfield won last year, 40-0, and has captured the honors in the last five matches and 13 of the last 14 games. The Bobcats are off to an 0-2 record so far in a rebuilding year with losses to bigger Pagosa Springs and Cortez. The last time Ignacio beat Bayfield on the Wolverines home field was in 1994 when they shut out sophomore quarterback Marshall Hahn, 12-0. The now Head Coach of the Wolverines began his fourth season at his alma mater with his fourth straight opening game victory in Dolores.
